This blog post is a continuation of the first part of “How Your Mindset Impacts Your Freelance Writing Earnings”. To recap, in part 1, we discussed:

In this part 2, we’ll discuss how to retrain your brain in order to gear it up for success.

Let’s dive straight in…

I’m going to focus on the mind and the brain. The brain is conscious & the mind is your subconscious.

Now, I am no expert in this subject matter (my thing is small business marketing, not the mindset), so I am basing this article on some (not all) material from Dr Caroline Leaf. She is a Christian Neuroscientist, and the author of “Switch on Your Brain” (amongst many other popular titles).

There is plenty of information to be found around this stuff, but I am weary about trusting it, and with this blog post, I wanted to really give you something of value; something that has the power to change the course of your life. And in order to give you that, I needed to know that the info I give you is sound and that it will work.

I know that Dr Leaf’s info is as close to the truth as we can get, because she uses Scientific research backed up with Biblical truths. For me, God being the Creator of humanity is the ultimate source of trustworthiness.

OK, so here goes:

The Bible states in Proverbs 23:7: “As a man thinketh in his heart [my words: the heart is the subconscious mind], so is he”.

In other words, the things you believe, you will become. What you believe, you are.

Here’s what you need to know: your conscious brain is the reasonable, logical part of you. It consists of the thoughts you choose to think. Unfortunately, it only drives about 5% of all the actions you take on a daily basis.

The subconscious mind, on the other hand, is where your true heart and identity are housed. As I said in part 1, the subconscious is the operating system which drives the conscious part of your mind.

So the brain most of us are aware of is being controlled by the mind we are not aware of. And that mind drives around 95% of our actions.

What is of great concern, is that the subconscious mind is not reasonable, logical or analytical.

Everything that comes at it, it stores as reality.

Consider this: when you watch a horror movie, your subconscious believes that you are watching something real; that it’s really happening.

Side note: if you’re a Christian, this Bible verse from Philippians 4:8 will now make a lot more sense:

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.”

Let’s just pause here. Right now, I want you to think of someone (or perhaps you, dare I say?) who “loses it” when they get angry…

When they are in that state of mind, it’s their subconscious mind that is driving them, not their conscious brain.

This can get pretty crazy – just think about it…

Knowing that, it makes more sense as to why there are so many screwed up people in the world; traumatic things have happened to them, and their subconscious has stored it as truth.

When they get into a state of crisis, their subconscious can make them go a little pear shaped…

See now, here’s what you need to know: it is your subconscious mind which controls how you perceive life, your reactions, how you think of yourself, and whether you will succeed in your freelance writing business, or not.

The subconscious mind is “programmed” based on every thought, action, emotion, and experience you have ever had!

Now see why your mind can be your greatest enemy: every time someone has said something nasty about you and you’ve believed it, well, that is now truth to your subconscious mind, and your subconscious drives this “truth” into your life as if it is real truth.

If aunt Beth who brought you up, kept telling you that you’re a rubbish…

If your father came home drunk every night and bashed on things which frightened you, making you hide every time you heard a noise…

If your mom kept saying that you should be more like your older sibling who scores A’s…

I am sure round about now, that the penny has dropped.

That is why every person’s reality is based on their personal perceptions, and their life experience.

It’s why so many of us are capable of of judging others so fast; because we lack understanding of others because their life experience is different to ours.

It’s why someone will think you are shouting at them when you really aren’t. The subconscious is powerful and can act against you.

Dr Caroline Leaf says that, “You do not become what you think, you become what you believe, and all beliefs are stored in the subconscious.”

Your aim as a freelance writer,

is to get your subconscious to be in line with the person you want to be

(aka, a high earning freelance writer).

Resetting the subconscious

And here at last comes the good news! It is possible to reset your beliefs, experiences, and thinking patterns!

Every morning, new brain cells wait to be programmed. That’s why so many gurus will say that when you wake up, you need to say positive stuff to yourself.

Here’s how this thing works: every thought you have is an actual physical structure in your brain:

The more you think about something, the more the thought structure grows.

Dr Leaf states that, “Research shows that 75 – 98% of all mental, physical, and behavioral illness is caused by our thought life.”

Your subconscious mind has so much power, that it can make your body sick!

Right, let’s move on with the techniques you can use to reset your mind:

Discipline your mind

Although you can’t control what has already happened in your life, and the programming that’s already been plugged into your subconscious, now that you’re aware of your subconscious, you can now choose to change your reactions, and changing your reactions will change your brain, which controls your genes as well as your health.

The wonderful news is that each of us has a free will, and we can choose what we are going to think about, and what we are going to believe.

Don’t just allow any thoughts to enter your mind. Reject them if they will do you harm.

Learn about new stuff

Make a point of learning things. Start off by mastering the art of online writing.

The more you stimulate your brain, the more intellectually intelligent you will become, the better your language skills, and the more emotionally intelligent you will become. This will improve your entire life, not only your freelance writing business.

Focus deeply on things

The way that you think changes how the brain functions.

To change, the brain needs stimulation. Take time to focus and deeply consider things intellectually, asking yourself questions and answering them. Switch off all the activity around you, and THINK. In this way, you will change your brain by creating new neural pathways that are healthy. It will also increase your intelligence and EQ.

Just think…we all go through periods of suffering in our lives. Now if we were to couple the suffering with deep thought and self-reflection, we could actually use our suffering to become more intelligent and creative!

Become aware of your thoughts. Then practice either allowing a thought, or rejecting it, but don’t let it simply slide right in.

Pray, daydream, self-reflect

When a person spends time praying, daydreaming or spending time on self-reflection, it develops creativity. This in turn, helps you find solutions to problems, and to come up with new ideas. This will enable you to provide better quality work for your clients, because you will be solution oriented.

It will also give you ideas to diversify your writing skills, so that you can make more money.

The more you practice this, the better your brain starts to function, leading to improved mental, physical, and spiritual health.

Practically speaking, that means that when something negative happens, stop, breathe, allow time for deep reflection, pray about it, and then let it go.

Your brain will work out the solution.
